Activated Carbon Production Process Introduction

Activated carbon is a commonly used adsorption material with a wide range of applications, including water purification, air purification, food and beverage processing, medicine, and more. Activated carbon is produced from different carbonaceous materials and the production processes vary accordingly. Here, we will introduce the activated carbon production process using wood-based materials as an example.

1. Carbonization: The first step in activated carbon production is carbonization. Raw materials, usually wood-based, are heated to very high temperatures (600-800°C) in an inert atmosphere to drive off moisture, volatile matter, and other impurities. The result is a carbonized material with a high carbon content.

2. Activation: The carbonized material is further processed in the activation stage. There are two types of activation methods: physical activation and chemical activation. In physical activation, the carbonized material is exposed to high temperatures (800-1000°C) in the presence of an oxidizing gas, such as oxygen or steam. This creates pores in the material, increasing its surface area and adsorptive capacity. In chemical activation, the carbonized material is treated with various chemicals, such as phosphoric acid, to create pores in the material.

3. Wash and Dry: After activation, the activated carbon is washed to remove any remaining impurities or chemicals. It is then dried to remove any residual moisture.

4. Sizing and Packaging: The final step is sizing and packaging the activated carbon. The activated carbon is often ground to a uniform particle size, and then packaged in bags or containers for storage and transport.

In conclusion, the production of activated carbon involves multiple processes to create a highly efficient adsorbent material from different carbonaceous materials. This product has a variety of functions and is widely used by many industries today. With the development of technology, the production process of activated carbon will continue to improve and create more innovative products.
